Weird Starting Situation V70-XC70 1998

Yesterday, while starting my wife's '98 XC some really strange (even for Volvo) things happened. On the first attempt, the car started and immediately died. After several more cranking attempts, the engine finally started and ran rough for a while and then smoothed out to the normal idle. Now, here is the weird part, when it finally started, the the instrument lights would come and go off by themselves. This happened several times even though the light switch was in the OFF position. I shut the engine down and restarted it, everything was fine and there have been no further problems after driving it several times. This car never had any previous starting problems but my wife recalls one other time when the dash light flashed on and off by themselves. Does anyone have a clue as to what may be going on here?

There appear to be 2 unrelated problems. I don't think the lights and hard start are from the same problem.
The occasional hard start could be from a slow responding AMM (cleaning the elctrical plug might help) which contributes to too much gas in the cylinder, making for a harder restart until the plugs are burned off. Make sense?

The light switch may be going or just have a loose prong, bad coupling with the wires. Mine died a couple of years ago and was fixed. Just pop it out of the dash and have a look at the back.

Dirty or worn ignition switch contacts? Frequently reported on the 850 at least.

Sounds like a draining battery...normal if you cranked and cranked and cranked. If the battery charges up after some driving and this doesn't happen again, I wouldn't worry about it...but could be a sign of a dying battery...thus the starting issues to begin with.

Start/dies immediately can also be caused by a faulty key. The microchip inside does not send the correct code to the immobilizer... Got one myself that fails occasionally

I believe you are correct about the immobilizer/key being the problem. I didn't think that the '98 had this feature but I checked my electrical manual and, sure enough, its in there. My '99 V70 had a similiar incident a few years ago but without the flashing dash lights. Taking out the key and trying it again did the trick. Still can't figure out what causes the the key to be "misread" on rare occasions.
