Weak Headlights V70-XC70 1998

I have a 1998 V70 whose headlights seem to be very dim. I've got about 95,000 miles on the car and was wondering if it was common for the headlights to lose their intensity by this time, or if I have some other sort of problem. thanks.

Weak Headlights - if USA model car, the headlights ARE crummy V70-XC70 1999

    You did not specify:
    1. If the lights have gotten dimmer with time
    2. If the lights are the same as ever, but you are now more sensitive to them
    3. If the lights have always been crummy

The headlights on USA-model V70s and S70s are crummy, seriously inferior to the genuine Hellas installed on the equivalent cars in Europe. I know this because I switched headlights with the European ones. Buying the genuine European Hellas proved to be quite an ordeal. I searched and searched and never found a supplier in the US or Canada. Finally, a friend brought them back from Sweden for me in his suitcase. Total cost was around $700. The so-called E-code from FCP are from Taiwan and are much less expensive. Another hint: you need to replace the entire headlight unit. The European glass alone will not do it. The reflector units are different.

Weak Headlights - if USA model car, the headlights ARE crummy V70-XC70 1998

The headlights have been crummy since I got the car last March. I have not noticed a decline in their performance since then, but that is not to say it has not happened. I have been thinking about replacing the bulbs with PIAA Extreme Whites, and since the lenses are not foggy or blurry, I was hoping that the bulbs alone would improve brightness. Any thoughts?

Weak Headlights - bulbs will not help much V70-XC70 1998

Good timing for your question about bulbs. The January 2005 "Consumer Reports" has a test of various replacement bulbs. They said the results were no better than stock - just the color changed depending on the particular bulb. However, they just tested bulbs that you can buy at a regular US parts place. I have a suggestion. Go to AutoLamps Online in Chester, UK, and order the Philips VisionPlus bulbs. They will mail them to your house. See if these help enough for your needs.

Before you replace bulbs, something to check: clean all the contacts on the electrical connectors that go to your headlights. Trim a cardboard fingernail file and clean in the fittings where the contacts are located. Blow out the dust with canned air and reassemble everything. This may help, especially if your car lives somewhere where humidity and corrosion are problems. Living in Mississippi, I know that whenever the car is doing something funny, invariably it is from bad electrical connections. Good luck.

I do believe they lose their intensity with age. We replaced our 850 bulbs with Sylvania Silverstars and the difference is great. No special wiring required. I didn't believe they could lose so much intensity, but have seen it too many times. Kind of like over rated use of flourescent lights in the home----they lose a lot in a rather short period of time.

I remember testing incandescent bulbs in a lab several years ago and found that the brightness (lumens) dropped off (see link below)with age. They also lasted longer using AC current as oppose to DC. Apparently DC is more likely to boil off the tungsten atoms in an uneven pattern than AC, creating weak spots in the filament. For those who are interested, this is called the "soret effect", I think - been a long time. The boiled off tungsten, and likely other stuff, presents itself as the dark or shiny stuff that collects on the inside of the bulb.

I agree the 98 V70 lights are not bright. Maybe 4 or so KCs mounted on the roof ?

If you've been dissatisfied with the intensity of the original equipment lights since you got the car, then the alternative lights should be considered. If the lights were once okay but have now lost their former intensity, look for an electrical problem. They do not go dim except perhaps right before they fail and if failing, not likely both at the same time. Have your battery, charging system and battery connections checked thoroughly. Even a small voltage or charging current deficit will weaken the intensity of otherwise normal lighting.

somewhere on brickboard it was written that first you must change to e code headlights(FCP) before any other mods are done. i did as instructed and at the time did not replace bulbs.the difference was dramatic!!

Weak Headlights -- another Volvo tradition, like the jacks! V70-XC70 1998

I have e-codes, AND upgraded bulbs and thery're still not even close to the HIDs on my Acura. Funny, I hated the Acura's headlights when I bought it -- they were tooooo bright, or so I thought! People are complaining about the XC90 and R headlights, too, so it's not just our cars, and it's something that's been going on for years, like what was the last round-headlight Volvo, the 140? The early 240?

In the case of our cars, I think it has something to do with the amoebiform headlights -- it's difficult to improve on a spherical reflector, probably why BMW, Porsche and MB use round or near-round headlights. So that's my $0.02, and also the argument I'm gonna use on my wife for a 911: "Seeeee -- lookit the headlights, it's a much safer car than the Volvo, dear!" :D
