Air pump, not replacing it? C70 1998

I was just informed that my air pump and sas valve have failed and it will cost me over $700 to fix. I understand what they do, so my question is, what if anything will I harm if I don't replace them? I have see all the posts here that talk about it, but non of then address the consequences of not replacing it.

Thanks,
Luis

If you can hear the pump running (driver side under battery) Start by replacing just the valve ($86), and reset the code. If it comes back, then do the pump.

I assume you have a CEL on? The only real consequences of not replacing it is your car will fail emissions testing if your area requires it. This is one of those worthless EPA mandated systems that has nothing to do with your engine preformance. The emission center's computer will read the "history" of your car's CEL codes. They can tell if the light was just reset vs the problem repaired as the car must be run thru a "drive cycle" after the repair to prove it has been corrected. If you just ignore the CEL, another more significant problem may arise that you'd be unaware of. As mentioned, FCP Groton has the parts needed much cheaper than $700.

jB's right. My air pump set the code w/in 3k of buying it. Good thing I check it every now and then, cause the car set another code about 3k after that. As you know the CEL is just a dummy light that can be set by many problems. Just keep up w/ it all.

    Hi Luis...

The air pump runs only two minutes to control emmissions during cold start-up.

Take a look at this page... it explains the air pump and its fuction, as well as showing what is involved in changing it. (these shots are of an 850... yours may look different)

    http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/airpump1.php

    Then go to this page...

    http://fcpgroton.com/CSV70/volvocsv70fuelsystem.htm

You will see the cost of the parts. The air pump costs $295.00, and the check valve is $86.00. Then there is the gasket and clamps. The total parts cost, even if you include a new purge valve, is less than $450.00.

The job takes about an hour.

    Good luck
