Does the windshield washer tank level sensor go bad?

Hi all,

The low fluid light stays on even though the tank is full.

I removed the sensor and cleaned it and the light stayed off for 2 days. Now, it's back on again.

Thanks,
Bryan

Not normally, but it can go bad. A good cleaning usually works.

Does the windshield washer tank level sensor go bad?

Klaus,

Thanks.

I tried cleaning it with alcohol but it still didn't help. How does the sensor work?

I opened the sheath and found the + and - leads secured by a glass insulator. The sheath seemed to be sealed with silicone where the wires enter, although the seal appeared to be broken.

Is the plastic sheath conductive?

Bryan

Does the windshield washer tank level sensor go bad?

So simple, its almost scary. Water conducts electricity. no water, no electrical connection, fluid low.

Does the windshield washer tank level sensor go bad?

Klaus,

I think the set-up may be different on the '98. The two leads connect to tuning fork shaped probes inserted into the glass tube.

I searched some engineering sites on the web and the sensor may be what is known as a "vibrating fork." It works by sending a frequency from one fork to be received by the other. The change in the level of immersion in the fluid (process medium) will cause a change in the frequency and trigger the light.

I'm not an engineer and my interpretation could be way off base.

My previous car, a GM make, did use a conductive probe sensor.

I like the frequency stuff! Thanks for the info.

Does the windshield washer tank level sensor go bad?

Found this the other day and was looking for your post, so you posting again tonight helped. http://www.fcpgroton.com/CSV70/csv70cooling.htm has the OEM coolant level sensor for $18 I'd go with this and be done with this problem. While you're at it look and see what else groton has. I buy most of my maitenance items from them.
