hello all-

can anyone recommend a replacement jack for the 850 wagon? and does anyone else have an issue with theirs? i hate it and think it's dangerous. any suggestions would be welcome.

hydraulic bottle jack at LEAST 2 tons lift capacity - cheap, easy to get, goes i nthe spare wheel well and ANYONE can get eh car up (also square of 18mm board to place underito n soft gorund)...oh and an extending wheel wrench to break the lug nuts free....

with those my 4yo could change the wheel...(well perhaps not but you know what i mean!)

FYI my delica has a bottle jack as standard and that weight in at 2500kg!!!

I have a floor jack and jackstands.

I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that I have an extra Volvo jack in my garage that I use for snow tire changes. I like the fact that it can lift two wheels at once. I do put jsckstands under the car. Quickly. I'd suggest a board under the jack on uneven ground.

I also carry around an air pump in the car and have AAA. There are multiple sources for heavy-duty scissors jacks.

Using my floor jack to lift both wheels is great for tire rotation. When my daughter started to drive, I bought her a AAA card and a cell phone. She isn't strong enough to break the lug nuts loose by herself anyway.
The trunk jack is worthless, along with the temp spare. Get a flatbed tow and have the tire fixed/replaced.

Hell yes I have an issue with mine. I own two 97 850 wagons. If you try to use that damned jack on soft ground, what it will do is slowly kick out from under the car and let the car down onto the threaded portion of the jack, scarring or cracking the plastic door channel. It did it on both of my 97's. What a worthless piece of crap. No, I don't know if there is a carry-round replacement. Apparently your only option is a roll-around floor jack, which won't help you much out in the boonies. Dick

so, you don't have another replacement even though you hate it, too? i just don't feel confident w/ that thing. i had no issue w/ the one from my old 240. can't any other jack be used w/ success?

Ron--I never thought to drag out the jack for my 240 and see if it works on the 850. The hanger, as I seem to recall on the 240, is similar to the 850's. My 240 though is in Idaho, my 850 here in Oregon. The next time I'm in Idaho I'm going to check and see if it will work. The 240 jack is superior, with its round base and arm. I think the 850 jack was designed for mental comfort, but never intended for actual use. Dick

I've been thinking of dumping the space-saver spare and jack and replacing them with a sealer/inflator and a small air pump. They both seem pretty useless to me, and I have better uses for my wagon's under-floor storage space.

Were you aware that there was a recall early on? Even the new one is not great though. The driveline of the car being rather loose (like many other cars), I put extra chocks on the side that's not being raised.

wasn't aware of that. just got this 850 last march- had a 240 before that. i'd like something that i can feel secure with, but raising the whole side doesn't seem right. the base of that thing is tiny--- what were they thinking? i'd like to see an old woman dealing w/ that!

One would think that for a company that is focused on safety they could come up with a better jack than the standard issue jack. I agree that it`s just plain dangerous. My wife had owned her 850 for 3 months when I got the emergency call one morning; flat on the way to an important meeting. Crisis!! She couldn`t figure out to operate the jack & when I got there I tackled it & got the tire changed(those useless donut tires are another issue!!) but it was a little scary. I now use a hydraulic jack under the axle which has worked fine tho` I`ve only used it once & at home, not under combat conditions. At least, it doesn`t lift the whole side of the vehicle.
