ECU problem S70 1998

Has anyone encountered this one. My 98 S70 runs just fine. It has an IPD upgrade ECU which was installed a bit more than 3 years ago. Just last week the car failed DMV inspection because, when the inspector plugged in the OBD II reader, he could not get any readout. The ECU apparently signaled that it was not "ready" to provide a readout. The car previously passed inspection with this ECU. A trip to the Volvo dealer (and a few $)confirmed this fault. So now, what to do? All suggestions cheerfully accepted.

I don't know if you rectified this yet, but you need to perform a 'drive cycle'. Most car manufacturers have different ways posted for doing this. If the battery was disconnected or power to the ECU was interrupted in any way, it will need to re-learn. The sensors need to get feedback under different driving conditions, etc. I'm sure by now your normal driving has done the job, but if you ever run across this again, usually a 30 minute drive on the highway and a 15 minute drive through a busy town/city will complete the drive cycle.

    Good luck.

Ira, I would suggest that you contact Jerrad Isch @ IPD. Even though the ECU in your car is three years old, I believe that Jerrad and some of his cohorts would be willing to provide you with suggestions that may help you with this problem. Just a suggestion since I have always found IPD to value customer service. Good luck, Fred.

these cars can be a bear to get "ready". sometimes takes 2-3 days. depending where you live, you may be able to get a waiver for a car not ready but sniffs ok. there may be a CARB bulletin online that may be some help, even if you're not in calif. good luck, chuck.
