S70 a/c lights flashing S70

The lights on my '98 S70's climate control unit flash back and forth sometimes. The cabin filter is new, but the a/c hasn't been working as well as it should lately. I added a can of refridgerant a few weeks ago and the system cooled fine. It's just not as cold as it should be. The lights that flash are the fresh/recirc air and the a/c on/off. Any idea why it does this?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

    Hi Dave,

The flashing lights on the climate control panel simply mean that there is a fault with the system. It could be anything from a temperature sensor fault to a blower motor problem. What you need to do is to have the codes read off from the Electronic Climate Control (ECC) module. This will tell you where to start. The lights do not necessarily indicate a serious problem (I have only ever seen minor climate control faults in these cars). A common failure in the S70 is the in-cabin temp sensor, for example. It is a relatively cheap part and can be installed in ten minutes. Anyway, don't panic, just have the codes read out and then you will know where to go from there. Let me know if you need anything...

      Hi Joe,

Will an OBD II reader retrieve the codes or is there a Volvo unique tool?

      Thanks,
      Dave

        Hi Dave,

A generic OBDII scanner may not do the trick. Due to the fact that OBDII is only required to standardize fault codes for the powertrain and emissions systems, climate control codes are not part of OBDII. It wouldn't hurt to give it a try, but I'd be willing to bet that you're unable to communicate with the climate control with it. On a 1998 model, the Volvo System Tester (VST) is used for all vehicle communication (1999 and up uses Volvo's "VIDA" system). Anyway, it may not hurt anything to let it go for a while. Who knows, it may solve itself (not that I'm implying that there is no fault, but it may stop flashing). The A/C off and recirc lights on my wife's 1995 850 flash sometimes, but mostly they do not (and all is well; just a sporadic code for the cabin temp sensor, in her case). Anyway, if you can, have it checked out. If not right away, it's likely not a matter of life or death.

        I hope this helps...

I had a similar problem with my 99 S70. Whenever I first started the car, the lights would "flash". It was a small climate controller much like a computer which had to be replaced. I can't give you any idea what the cost was since mine was still under warranty when it happened.

      Good Luck
