Oil pan replacement, big job? 850

Hi brickers,

I hit a big rock in the middle of a gravel road yesterday and I SEVERELY damaged my oil pan, it needs to be changed or fixed.
Anyway, it's impossible to fix it bolted to the engine, it needs to be removed.

Big job for a DIYs?

Any recommendations?

Thanks a lot

The wife just yesterday was following a dump truck which chucked out something that punched a hole. The local indy estimated it at $645.00. Luckely she didn't run it dry of oil. Tracing down the trucking company is the next step to try and recover some dollars.

A manhole cover did a job on my oil pan last spring and a replacement was covered under my collision policy. Lucky I had $200 deductable. Partial coverage anyway. Hotel bill and food for two days (while I waited for repair) was not covered. I was traveling and the local dealer did not have one in stock. The junk yards would not give up a pan from a turbo engine. The turbo pan is unique. Don't know Good luck with your replacement. They did not do a good sealing job on mine. It leaks bad.

I'd also recommend a metal skid plate for future protection. 850

I'd also recommend a metal skid plate for future protection. IPD sells them for other models -- I'm not sure if they do for yours, but it's worth checking with them.
    Good luck.

Id recommend replacing the oil pan as opposed to any type of repair. You should be able to find a used oil pan at a salvage yard or maybe ebay fairly cheaply. Heres a link to a write up on volvospeed.com detailing oil pan o-ring replacement. It describes the oil pan removal & reinstallation steps. Heck, if you feel up to it you may even want to get the o-ring kit & replace those. Its pretty cheap & if your taking the oil pan off anyway, its not too much more work. Supposedly this helps quiet some of the valve noise these cars develop with age.

    Heres the link: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=11441&hl=

    Good luck, Matt

      Hi Matt,

Sorry about my ignorance but what is the oil pan o-ring replacement, what is the relation with noisy lifter valves?

      Thanks

Well....keep in mind im no expert. I have a 98 S70 and havent needed to do this yet. From what I understand there are two O-rings between the pan & the block, and another between the oil pickup and the block. In time they can either become brittle & deteriorate, or part of the o-ring gets sucked up into the block. Supposedly this leads to poor oil circulation to the upper part of the engine & causes the valves/lifters to be rather noisy. I was just suggesting it if he was gonna replace the pan becuase its just a matter of removing the old & installing the new rings once the pans off.
