RPM gauge problem? S70 1999

My RPM guage (sorry for the spelling) was always at 1 when the the car was turn on without moving. But today I noticed the the meter went down two lines. Its under the number one. I don't know much about cars in general so I dont know what this means exactly.
My car is at 65k miles and the service light always goes on when I start the car (but eventualy goes away). I'm wondering if the light is indicating that it needs its 60k service or that it has something to do with the RPM meter.... or maybe even both?
I live near NYC but two weekends ago I drove to Columbus, OHIO and back, and last weekend I drove to Worcester, MA and back. I wonder if these two long trips had anything to do with it?
Again, I'm clueless when it comes to cars and apologyse if I sound dumb, but I would just like simple answers to whats going on here. I would really appreciate any insight or suggestions you can provide. Thanks.

PS: Should I take my car for the 60K service check? Is it really necessary? Do they do important things in this service?

The service light that comes on when you start your car and goes off soon after is just a reminder light that it's time to change your oil. If it was changed recently the tech forgot to reset it. It comes on every 5000 miles, I belive. About the RPM Guage: 1 is actually 1000, 2 is 1000, etc. At idle the gauge should be right "under" 1. However if your idle is rough and it's a bit lower, you might need a tune up. When is the last time you had the spark plugs and ignition wires changed? Have you not had your 60,000 mile service and your car is at 65? You should have it done. There's quite a few things that should be done at that interval. Although not on the schedule, insist that your transmission fluid is flushed and replaced too. Your car will be much happier for it when it hits 100,000 miles or so. Not stupid questions, so don't put yourself down. Just keep coming back here if you need to.

      Thanks for responding MIJ! :)

I change my oil religiously every 3k miles at Expressway. So the service light is definately not from the oil changes... i'm sure it has to do with the 60k Volvo service.
As far as the RPM guage goes, yeah i've never had any wires and spark plugs replaced... so thats what might be affecting it.
But I really don't want to take it to the service... they will charge be an arm and a leg... i'm sure you know this too. So i'm going to have to find a mechanic knowledgeable in Volvo cars and that's not a thief.
My transmission fluid was also changed as per Expressway guidelines (where I had it done). They suggested I changed it at 52K for my Volvo and I did for about $90. And I can feel the difference now, my gears are alot smoother, what a world of a difference! The guy at Expressway even showed me the difference, between the old black fluid and the new pink one.
Anyways, thanks again for all yoru suggestions. I guess it will come down to finding somebody that I can trust with my car... because now my break pads are starting to go to. :(

      Thanks!!! :)

You are lucky you found someone trustable at Expressway. If he ever leaves, you should too. These quicky lube type places are notorious for providing wrong/bad service on Volvo's. Obviously he knows Volvo's and that's nice. I do think however that he or someone else there forgot to reset the service light after the last oil change (easy to do and has to be done each time). The Service Light will come on every 5K miles if not reset. So....it's not coming on due to 60K mile service being needed.

Btw, you can reset the service light yourself by doing this:
        * Press and Hold odometer reset button
        * Turn ignition switch to "run" position
        * After Service Light flashes, release odometer reset button
        * Turn ignition off
        * Turn ignition back on to confirm reset

There are no stupid questions. There are many people who read this board, and will answer any questions you have. This is a Volvo community of friends and fellow Volvo lovers.

As to your questions about your car, take the advice offered by "MadeInJapan". If you have not recently had the car professionally serviced, and you cannot do it yourself, it's probably time for a good tune-up, as well as other services which should be performed before the weather gets too cold.

I recommend a good independent mechanic, rather than a Volvo dealer. The services we're discussing (spark plugs, cap, rotor, wires, throttle body cleaning, air filter, coolant flush, oil change and lube, tranny flush, tire rotation) will run a few hundred dollars at a dealer.... you'll save 75 to 100 dollars at an independent service shop.

      Good luck

Great suggestions Marty, I really appreciate it! As a matter of fact i'm going to print this and take it to the mechanic and tell him I want all this done, including my break pads. Thanks! :)

PS: if you have anything that you can add or have forgotten to post before, please do so now so that I can be ready when I find a good Volvo-knowledgeable mechanic.
