How far can one go on the T. Belt 850

I have seen all types of reports and some say an 850 is a collision engine some say not?

50k?
90k?

1995 850 Turbo

PS does anyone really get >25 mpg?

If you look in your maintenance book, ALL the suggested intervals are mileage OR time. I think it is 7 years for a '95 850.

In addition to an expensive repair, a broken timing belt can lead to a serious accident as well.

particualrly when your significant other finds out you knew it needed doing and you didnt and you now have multi thousand dollar bill.....i think the word bobbitt was inverted for such situations...

but james makes a very good point if it failed in just the wrong way and totally locked the engine you could well lock the front wheels solid, snap half shafts (destroying gearbox too...), collapse front suspension , blow tyres out, crash, die and burn.....and thats on a good day!

now ok thats unlikely...but its possible...

its a maintenance cost like changing oil, having tyres with tread etc...

Look in your owners manual. Whatever interval it says in there you should follow it.
Then again, do you feel lucky?????????????

you can go till it breaks, then you will go to the bank for a new engine.....change at 80k or 8 years on a 2.5 20 valve 95, other year/models may be different - personnaly i changed mine when i boughtthe car at 59k and 8 years, at 110 k it will be changed again (its cheap insurance!)...

i get 30-32 regularly, on a recent run i got 44.2 uk mpg, this equates to 36-37 us mpg (that was a a very light right foot and 56 mph on the highway under cruise control)...

oh and thats an auto box too! (but i did turn off the aircon!)

Belt needs to be changed every 60,000. Don't chance it! My '94 850 Turbo Wagon averages 24.7 miles per gallon. Gets almost 30 on strictly highway cruise control 65 miles per hour.

how far CAN one go or how far SHOULD one go. ill tell you about the can. ive gone 170000km/105000miles and 150000km/930000 on two of them. when i bought the car the dealer told me, "ya it was changed at 112km/70m". eventually got it changed at 200000km/124000miles, thinking i was doing it early. the mechanic said the belt was in pretty bad shape. using my colombo-like powers of deduction, i surmised that the dealer lied to me and that this belt WAS THE ORIGINAL. cant prove it but it makes sense. btw i do a lot of highway driving which i understand can lengthen the useful life of your belt. closing in on 400000miles in a few weeks and almost ready for another one. just my experience not recommending this modus operandi to anyone.

Replace it every 70K or yes, valves hit pistons when it breaks and that'll cost you over $3K to repair. Not worth risking.
