I want to put a hitch on my '98 V70 GLT but have never done this before. Do the hitches bolt right up or do I need to drill holes for it. How hard are the trailer lights to hook up, and should I use a genuine Volvo hitch or is there a better after market hitch that I should buy. Lastly if I took it to the dealer how much could I expect to pay to have a hitch and the lights done or should I take to somewhere else? Thanks

Here is one source - basically (or maybe exactly) the same as u-haul version. IPD specializes in Volvo stuff and while overpriced you can feel secure with what they sell. This is the same one I put on my 850 wagon.

If you look at the picture, only the removeable silver ball mount really shows unless you get on your knees. Drilling and bumper issues are for sedans.

And the one comment about the wiring is good - I hide mine in the little side compartment in the rear and just hang the connector out the rear gate when needed. Remember the car is only rated at 3500 lbs!

And if you are at all worried have uhaul or someone do the wiring. It can be interesting, and most problems are usually with the trailer's wires and a loose ground wire and not the tow vehicle.

The original volvo hitch is the only one I would use....less visible, more attachment points, etc. The hitch for you are in the same as sedans, from 1993 to 2000 850/S70.
I hated the volvo wiring harness. Mine was a Euro plug, requiring further conversion with a transformer to do Uhaul trailers. Also, these "weatherproof" external plugs are trouble waiting to happen....back up from that....have uhaul install the transformer and wiring lead INSIDE the rear of the car, and flop it out of the tailgate when you need it. Closing the tailgate will not hurt the flat "beltlike" plug wire.

To install the Volvo hitch you will need to remove the rear bumper..a few rivits need to be drilled out in th wheel wells, a couple of small nut need to be removed, and then 2 huge bolts do 99% of the bumper support. The volo hitch is secured be four very large bolts and about 8 smaller bolts.

OK, there is no way I am going to take the rear bumper off. Do you have any idea how much a dealer would charge to do the hitch and wiring?

purchased a hitch from local u haul dealer u donot need to remove bumper,towed a jetski from n.y. to fla. and back no problem.i did wire up a tailight converter that uses a isolated power supply wire direct to battery, so that it has no effect on cars electronics or wiring

Is there anyway you could post a pic of your car with the hitch? I would like to see the difference between a u-haul hitch and a genuine Volvo hitch. It would be worth it to me to spend the extra money on a genuine hitch if it is truly less noticeable. But if they are both just as visible I would go with the cheaper hitch. Thanks

Nice so you can’t see the bar going across that the receiver connects up to? How much was the hitch and is it U-Haul brand? Also did you need to drill holes to install it?

u haul brand but i would think that it is made by some other manuf.I.E. drawtite e.t.c.no drilling hitch was in stock if your local dealer has one in stock,ask to look at it,if you like fine if not,not.approx 140 plus receiver and ball,check current pricing.
