timing belt in st. louis, mo V70-XC70 1999

I am going to have to replace the timing belt on this car soon (1999 v70 xc with around 88,000). I have always done this DIY on other makes I have owned, but on this car I'm not sure it I should do it.

Should a rairly competent shade tree type do it?

If not, can anyone suggest a shop in the St. Louis area at which you have had some good work performed (at a fair price!)?

Thanks in advance...

Go for it dogman, and then drive to MN and help me with mine. Does the IPD tool work on the '99...if so, I will split the cost. BTW, I know you are more than "rairly" competent.

Go for it. It isn't too bad of a job. I have done my 96T three times, 70K, 140K, 210K. Still have the original tensioner, water pump, and idler. I don't beleive in replacing things that don't need replacing. BTW the belts I used for replacments were Gates from Auto Zone. The original Volvo belt had slight cracks when I replaced it. The two Gates belts looked like new after 70K. Probably would have gone another 100K with no problem. So much for Volvo OEM. Volvo doesn't make belts. The V70 suggested replacment is 105K. I think I will replace my V70 one at around 100K. The V70 looks like it has better access to that end of the engine. No idler for the serpentine and smaller PS pump and romote PS fluid tank. I think the 99 and 00 are the same. I just replaced the serpenting belt on my V70 at 80K (original Volvo cracked) with a Continental from FCP. It is ribbed on both sides.
I say take on the job. You don't even need any serious tools. Follow the directions posted on Bay 13 and make sure you can identify and locate the timing marks. Highlite them so you can easily see them and make sure nothing moves until you have the new belt on. Rotate the engine by hand a few times to be sure the timing marks are correct before you button her up.
Good luck.

timing belt ............'99 on up V70-XC70 1999

On your '99, it suppose to be changed at 105K miles (NOT 70K) and with its manual t-belt tensioner (highly advized). This info is listed in your owners service/maintenance book.
Personally, I'd ONLY use OEM Volvo t-belts and tensioners (probably no aftermarket tensioner exists). Those aren't items to skimp on price compared to what can happen if the belt breaks.
