I'm not sure I would dismiss this as a blown head gasket.

Isn't the cap on the overflow tank a "pressure" style cap?
Meaning that the overflow tank is normally under pressure when the engine is running.
I don't think it is unusual for coolant to spew out of a hot engine when the radiator cap is removed. Many have been burned by doing that.
