I've developed the dreaded sway bar rattle in my new-to-me '96 965 w/170K. The sway bar links were replaced 39 & 33 Kmi. ago. One seemed to have play so the friend that normally does all the mechanical work on the car put it up on the lift today and installed a new one. Drove it down the road and it's still rattling just as bad. He didn't have time to do the other side so I took a new one and I'm taking it to the guy I get Amsoil & Nokian's from Thursday and we're going to replace the other side and inject Amsoil grease in the rubber boots of the sway bar links. He claims to have done this to the notoriously crappy multi-link suspension on his and other Audi's and has well over 100K mi. on his own car and hasn't had to replace any of the front suspension components. When I say crappy I mean they usually wear out rapidly not that the suspension design isn't good. I do a lot of back road driving and when I was considering buying an Audi an indy dealer with a good reputation told me to stay away from anything newer than '99 or I'd be rebuilding the front end ever year or two! Anyway, does anybody have a torque value for the sway bar links? BTW it has fresh control arm bushings and the sturts seem fine and don't see any play in the ball joints.
