rear axle swap 700

Would an '87 740 GLE rear axle (and diff) be identical to the '87 740 Turbo axle if they are both manual transmissions?

I figure they would be but wanted to throw this question out before I buy it from the wreckers as a replacement.

Contrary to what Al said, both are 1031 axles. The turbo axle is 3.54 ratio while the NA axle is 3.31 ratio.

The axle ratio is on a label on the left axle tube It is usually covered by undercoating . Bring some lighter fluid or solvent and a rag and you can clean it off and make sure you get the axle ratio you want.

I know that. Unless someone has changed the axle, the ratios will be as stated.

No need to worry any more.

I finally got the speedometer to work with the ABS speed sensor. The wiring diagram in the Haynes manual is incorrect. It shows the brown ground wire going to the pin labelled "s" and the green-white wire going to the pin labelled "SE". This is backwards.

It should be
- Brown going to "SE" ...I guess this means Signal Earth Ground???
- Green-white going to "S"

Just fixed it a moment ago, test drove and it reads fine.

Thanks for the help.

I'm glad you have it fixed. Brown usually represents ground, or "earth" on European cars.

Yes and no. The Non turbos are 1030 axle and the Turbos have the 1031 axle.
The 1031 is the stronger of the two. Both will bolt right into your car with no problems. I talked to Ross Converse about a year ago a V8 Volvo builder. He said that the 1030 would work fine with a 302 Ford. The weak link seems to be the posi unit instaled in these rear ends.
