Annoying intermittant stall outs. 850

I just purchased a 94 850 turbo wagon a few weeks ago. The check engine light came on soon after and it showed codes 241, egr system flow fault, and 315 Evap system fault. Around this time the car would stall out very intermittantly, could not tie it down to any specific scenarios- I would just be driving along fine and the engine would just cut off and the dash lights would come on. I would let the car rest for about 15 seconds and it would start back up and it would not stall out again right away- maybe a day later or mabey 10 min. later, very intermit, and unpredictable. Upon further investigation the vacuum hose to the egr vale kept working off- I secured it, and I also fixed a vacuum leak on the large hose that attaches to the throttle body. I also replaced the fuel filter and checked the spark plugs (seem fine).I also checked the battery grounds and connections and all seem fine. I cleared the codes and the check engine light has not come back on now for 3 days and I thought I had solved the problem and was pretty proud of myself- but the problem has reared its ugly head again. This time the car has stalled out twice soon after starting the car driving home from work, on a straight bit of road going about 35-40 mph (same deal the car will start up again and drive ok after 15 sec or so), and the check engine lights have not come back on. Are there any red flags to what this problem may be? Fuel relay? I am new to Volvos and have found these boards very informative. Any help would be much appreciated- Tony.

Mine recently did that - but after 2 days it stopped completely and it was the fuel pump (not just the relays). Mine is a 94 850 with 226k miles on it. Had the pump replaced and it's fine now! Perhaps your problem is different I am no mechanic but it seems like a co-incidence. Probably the other problems were unrelated.

Volvospeed is also a great resource I just cleaned my EGR according to their directions and accomplished it no problem, and I'm a complete beginner! Got rid of my EGR no-flow problem. I cleaned the attachments for the vacuum hoses to the throttle body, plus the hole that leads to EGR from throttle body. It was hard work to get all the gunk out (I bought this car last year and someone had neglected it) but worth it to save the $$ a garage would have charged! I used carb cleaner and also a screw and a nail to gouge out the gunk.

Don't forget the main system relay, the one under the cowl over the radiator. Little grey relay, brass clippy on top, this also provides power to your motronic system. I've also had the inner couplings on the connector to said relay somewhat fall apart, causing the same problem you both speak of.

With the EGR code happening with regularity, I would look at the air inlet hose into the throttle, and the vacuum lines coming off of it, since the EGR valve sits under there. A vacuum leak there can cause the code. It won't cause the stalling unless it is a RATHER LARGE vacuum leak, but then you wouldn't have been able to "fix" it for a few days.

The evaporator is the most likely AC culprit, unfortunately.

Well, you have a number of problems going on so I'll try and tackle each one at a time. Your EGR code is indicating that your EGR valve is fouling up and restricting air flow. Cleaning the EGR valve out will usually do the job without having to replace the EGR valve completely. I have done this. Your Evap code is indicating your evaporator has a leak. 850's are famous for this problem. If you are lucky, it is a small, slow leak and recharging the system every year will take care of the problem. I have been recharging my A/C every year for the last five years because I don't want to pay the big $$$ for repair. My charge last 5-6 months, getting me through the summer months. To be honest, I didn't know that a failed evap can give off a fault code. I hope we are talking about the same thing. Lastly, your intermittant problem I can relate to because it just started happening to me this past week! It usually is one of four things. The cam sensor, but a code is given confirming this. Clogged fuel filter, but usually you have hesitation on the highway etc. Failed fuel sender, but the car usually doesn't start right up afterwards. And the last cause which you and I share, is a faulty fuel sender relay. Today I am purchasing a new fuel relay and installing it. After talking to my mechanic, he agrees this is the direction to go in. We'll see if the problem returns in which case I'll start suspecting the fuel sender. Others will suggest grounding problems with the battery and vacumn leaks, but my feeling is the symtoms are different when these are a problem. Good Luck!

      Hi Tony,
Just had my Evaporator done by the dealer and it cost me $1,100..... when I drove home last night it started blowing warm air again. Isn't that a pisser. If the Evap was bad on my car should it have given a code??? I had no code but the dealer said I needed the Evap. I'm sure they will make good because they have been excellent with me in the past, but I am angered over replacing a possibly good Evaporator. But my question is about the code.
      Thanks - Marty

A bad AC evaporator sets no code. 850

An evaporator leaks, or it doesn't. If your AC problem, in the past, has always been "repaired" by a "recharge", the evaporator was most likely "a" problem, because you now have a new one. I wouldn't worry about replacing a "good" evaporator, because there aren't too many of those. There are those that have failed, and those that will fail. Your problem now, and maybe before, is most likely electrical.

        Chris

Thanks for the advice so far. I think I'm going to replace the fuel relay and see if that helps. The Evap code I was getting was for the evap emmissions system I beleive and has nothing to do with the AC system.Any more advice is welcome.

For you code 315 it most likely is your evap valve. Check your lines leading to and from them evap canister and if all is well then your probably looking at replacing the valve.

Buy it online and if, when, you get it it will not plug in you will need to buy a harness. Although, I just filed off the part on the valve that would not fit and it worked fine.
