thanks a lot for all of you who posted a reply so soon. it was indeed a simple hose that was not connected anymore. when i got a quick look under the hood, it was there and plain to see. i found this just as the tow truck was rolling up. as you can see, i don't have shade-tree skills, unlike many on the board.
THANKS AGAIN! it had nothing to do with the fuel pump or relay, of course. i surely could not have afforded anything worse right now.
