HELP with M-46.....I don't understand !!!!!!!!

THANKS for all the replies...I have 4 different manuals.And none of them really explain as well as Duane did HOW reverse and O/D are related...I checked my local junk yard and they want $80.00 for one, they have 3 or 4 to choose from not too bad IF I can find a good one...One thing I failed to mention was that in ALL gears when I let off the gas it idles no matter how fast I'm going. I understand now why this is related..I have 8 other cars and have never had this kind of tranny problem. Also when I put it in reverse I can hear it going into gear . So I think it is the O/D unit...

B.C mentioned that I need to get a unit that DOES NOT have the speed drive gear. Does this mean that prior years had the SAME tranny with a cable and later years didn't..Does anyone know what year they stopped putting the speedo cable in ??

All in all I think I did good for $100.00
