My intent was not to "slap" him while "he was down." He stated in his original post that he had recently spent "a small fortune" on brake work. This car only has 140,000 miles on it. I've seen rotors last well over 200K miles on 200 series cars, and knowing how easy it is to replace the pads on THAT car (at least w/o ABS), I thought that perhaps something was up. When he said "small fortune" I had visions of a $1K invoice for a complete rebuild of the brake system. My point was that either the car was not well maintained, and might not be worth putting more money into, OR his mechanic is not the most honest fellow in the world and he might want to have someone else replace the motor. I was trying to be helpful.
