sometimes if you use a metric socket on a standard nut/bolt, or vice versa, it'll be a CLOSE match, but not completely. there is some play. if the socket is the right size, when you fit it over the nut/bolt, there should be NO wiggling or play at all when you turn it. if there is, it's not the right size.
