Speedometer Madness, Gas Guage Hell

Went to the Volvo Graveyard in search of a speedo sensor and gas sender for my '86 740 GLE. Is it too much to ask know how much gas I have left, and how fast I am going? Apparently, for Volvo it is. There is absolutely no way to pull the gas sender through the access hatch. I had to drop the (plastic?) tank. There was no arm with a float like a normal sending unit, so no way to test it with my multimeter to see if it was any good. Darn. Now on to the speedo sensor. How do you get these things out? Does the outer ring unscrew? If so what do you unscrew it with? A pneumatic mini oil filter wrench? These things are in T-I-G-H-T. Forget it. The only way is to take the whole diff cover and swap it with yours and hope you get the right distance to the pulse wheel. Too bad I got wacked out readings on my multimeter from all the ones I tested. However, after working on those cadavers, I will be able to operate on the real patient with some skill. What did I get for my day in the Boneyard? A fog light, a courtesy light lense, a cigarette lighter, a dome light and a muffler bracket. All for $13. Does any one know what other models used the same rear end as my 86 740? there are some 200's and wagons I'd like to take a hack at in my search for a speedo sensor.
