Considering a (used) Volvo...

Flames expected.

Volvos are by no means reliable. They are safe. I have owned cars from the U.S., Germany, Japan, Italy, and Sweden. The Japanese was by far the most reliable. HOWEVER, having seen the results of two shoulda been fatal crashes, one head on, one rear ender, where everybody walked away from their bricks unscathed, I take the maintenance headaches in stride.

Good luck.
