oil leak from bottom half of engine. What could it be?

I don't understand what you mean by "rear half but in front of the oil pan". I have not ever observed any significant leakage from oil pan gaskets on these cars. More likely one or more front oil seals are leaking. As the oil drips down while you are driving, the wind will blow the oil towards the back of the engine. This is especially true if your car doesn't have the plastic belly pan installed.
