Yikes! Those instruments almost never fail.

"...intermittant fuel gauge...AND a temp gauge that at best registered only about 1/16 inch off cold..."

When the temp gauge and the fuel gauge misbehave together and misbehave the same way, you (your mechanic) should be suspicious of the instrument voltage regulator. Or loose nuts, gauges to PCB.

"...how difficult is it to attack, I mean, pull the instrument cluster on this brick?"

A 6' prybar, come-along, or stick of dynamite might work.....;-)
