I had the same problem except no check engine light. I replaced the RPM sensor that sits above or on top of the transmission as well as the fuel pump check valve. The problem seemed to be bettter after the RPM sensor but still intermittent. The fuel pump check valve did the trick. If the RPM sensor is original it may need to be replaced anyways. I don't like throwing parts at the car but it was a process of elimination.
