How to tell if U-joints are bad

Good question. I had a bad u-joint but I only picked it up with the drive shaft disconnected and pushing and pulling in the axis of the shaft revealed the problem at the U joint. Turning the joint and twisting it in place, it seemed fine. With a god tug though, it would pull out into a secondary position and then turning it revealed the slop in the bearings. Took me way too long to find it but it was a eureka moment and it took care of the drive train rumble.
