Maybe an electric guru can answer this

Chris -

What a frustration.

It occurs to me that if the alternator has a poor ground strap it could be over-charging. Somehow the output would be OK but the regulator wouldn't know that and keep jacking the voltage up.

I am not that guru, maybe Don F., Rob H., Paul S. or John S. knows this stuff.
