The engine will crank over even if the ignition amplifier and the CPS are nonfunctional.
If you are losing all electrical function I would start at the battery. How old is it? Are the posts and cables clean and tight?
If no electrical items are working at that point I would explore the possibility of the ignition switch failing; but it is odd that a cooling off period would restore it.
