That pack of washers has caused many a nightmare for owners. It's easy to put them back wrong if you don't know which does which and also the need to isolate the connection from the distributor body. Even when fitted properly it's possible for the tab on the internal wire to touch the body if you're not careful. That will short it out just as easily.
