When you say 'jiggle the handle' do you mean the shifter? If so, and considering your other post about the reverse lights, the first place I'd look is the neutral safety switch. A failing one will result in the symptoms you describe.

The switch can look ok but still be failing, which could be misleading your mechanic. Take a closer look at the NSS.
