I've had some luck with my old BMW speedos that drove too hard. The needle is driven through a magnetic coupling but has a centering bearing to keep the two halves of the coupling from physically touching. Humidity and crud through the years does it's thing.
A little WD40, or other light lube, directly into the drive and spun by hand or by drill has worked for me.
