Man... I can see spending $3500 for a *VERY GOOD* rebuild to high performance specifications... but it sure seems awful steep to me.

I too would be on the look out for a used engine in better shape than what you have... you can rebuild yours later. Not unlikely you could get a complete donor car with a good motor for $500 or less with a good engine.
