hey ya'll, I've got a 1991 240 sedan with 205,000 miles. i'm not much of a mechanic but i'm going to try a radiator flush and replace my thermostat because my car has been overheating. The haynes manual says to flush the system with a garden hose until it drains clean water. Ok, but where to you put the hose? do you run the water from the expansion tank? Or from the top radiator hose (where the thermostat is)? also, if I drain the coolant from the bottom hose, there is a large peice of metal that looks like part of the body below the radiator that won't allow fluid to drop directly down...i haven't tried it yet but most likely it will drip down the metal peice to a hole that is in it (the metal thing), is this right? lastly, i've heard that its a good idea to get all the dead bugs out of the radiator, does this have to be done pretty much by hand?
Any other tips on this and putting in a new thermostat would be appreciated, sorry for the simpleton nature of these questions but I really am fairly clueless when it comes to cars. I guess the good news is i'm willing to learn :-).
