93 945T axle into 88 745T

I am swapping a late axle into an early car. The speedo connectors do not match and I suspect the tone rings differ. What device in the car interprets the signal? The cluster? A computer? I am swapping dashboards as well, so I have the chance to import whatever wiring and controls are necessary from the donor car.
