Best way to raise 240 to change tranny.

I will be swapping out my auto tranny in my driveway and I am wondering if I should just raise the front or both the front and the rear. I have a large floor jack and a couple of jack stands but I never feel very secure under jack stands. Does anyone have any special method to raise their car fairly high and safely? I have seen people jack up their cars and put rims, laying flat, under each of the wheels what do you think about that?
Also I have a friend who will lend me his heavly duty metal car ramps, would they be of any use for this job?
Thanks...
