The right rear spring support arm of my '67 wagon suddenly gave up the ghost when I went over a bump on a Manhattan street recently. Since that time, to comply with the alternate side of the street parking regulations , I've been moving it from one side of the street to the other. I can't go far with it because there seems to be some kind of grinding noise that probably comes from the right rear break drum not being happy.
I have a parts wagon, same year and model in a far away garage I'm renting, whose support arm I have been trying to remove as a replacement.
Following the instructions of a Haynes manual, I have removed the bolt from the forward connection (the one with the pressed bushing), the shock absorber, the spring, and the two nuts on the two bolts of the aft connection to the assembly under the rear axel. (TheseVoS assemblies also have connections to the torque arms.
Unfortunately, the Haynes manual does not seem to discuss removing the entire support arm (to replace it.) The twin bolts (15/16 hexagonal heads, if I recall) do not turn...there seems no give to them at all -- even though they would appear to be free from encumbrance (the nuts).
They just don't seem to want to move.
A friend suggested that I should put the nuts back on the bolts to the point they are level with the end of the bolts and try punching them out.
I don't know.
Any suggestions by someone with knowledge of this operation would be greatly appreciated.
