Manual tranny OD solenoid 200

'84 242 Ti manual tranny with O/D, M46 I think, big flywheel (9") and driveshaft (2").

Here's my question. I have the tranny out of the car for a new clutch. OD was not working so I am looking into it. Removed the OD solenoid and applied 12V to the terminals. Windings have continuity. The spool moves maybe 1/8" - 1/4" in an outward direction. Is this the way it should be?

I disassembled the valve and made sure there were no deposits (none) and that the spring was OK (seems to be alright). If this is the way it should be, I'll be tracing the wires next (can't right now since the car is up on the lift with the back of the engine being held up w/a jackstand, hence the reason I started with the solenoid). Shifter switch is OK, haven't checked wiring or relay yet.

Any input appreciated.
