Air Shocks - Gabriel Hijackers

I just installed a set of Gabriel Hijackers in the rear of my 92' 960 sedan. Warning: not a drop in fit. One of the Nivomat's had failed and the car was leaning down on that side. I retained the original springs. I got a list of the mounting dimensions emailed to me from Bob Giles at Gabriel email: Robert.Giles@ArvinMeritor.com After trying to find one needing little or no modification, I gave up and settled on the 39212 which has an eyering and bushing at both ends and an extended and collapsed length that closely matches the nivomat's. I cut off the lower mount on the nivomat and welded it to the new shocks. The method I used was to cut off half of the lower eyering mount on the new shocks and spread open the remaining half circle to accept the nivomat mounts. Wet rags were used to keep the new shocks cool while welding so as to prevent damage. On the upper, I lathed down a brass bushing to fit inside the 1/2" diameter of the bushing on the new shocks a then reamed it out to 12mm to fit the original bolts. The Hijackers are bigger round so the hole in the arm that the shocks fit thru had to be enlarged slightly in the area of the lower mounting bolt holes. Also had to do a little grinding with a die grinder on the car up where the top of the shock sits to allow room for the air fitting that is welded to and sticks out from the shock. The air fitting is facing toward the front of the car and the lines come in behind the rear seat by drilling a couple of hole in the body-work.

Everything is working well. The car sits level with around 110 psi and I can haul my utility trailer loaded and have the car sit level with 160 psi. Ride is firmer but not as firm as Bilstein's.

Just wanted to let people know that it was possible to do as I had wondered my-self for a long time. A cheap alternative if you can do the fabricating.
