I have a 1964 PV544 with the Spicer model 27 differential in 4.10:1 ratio.
There are two probelms with it:
1) The last 'mechanic' (and I use the term very loosely!) didn't understand how to set the gear lash with shims and a dial indicator - or even the old 'grease pattern method! - so it howls when it's under load.
2) The gear ratio is too high for the W30 automatic transmission that was transplanted into the car. I need to install a 3.73:1 or lower set of gears.
Changing to the lower ratio would mean also changing out the carrier, since the 4.10 carrier won't fit the 3.73 gears.
While I've done this work in the past, and I'm confident that with enough time and a flat place to work I'd be able to either adjust the lash or replace the gears & carrier, my current health problems mandate that I SHOULD get some help with the project; preferably from someone who can tell a gudgeon pin from a wrist pin!
If anyone can recommend a shop that does good work at reasonable prices, I'd be grateful. Getting this fixed would mean that I could finally listen to my radio (if I want to, which is rarely!)
