Earlier this month I started a lively thread regarding gas mileage when I observered the deleterious effects of having my air thermostat stuck open pulling only hot air (25.1 mpg vs the 29 mpg I expected on a road trip)
Data point #2:
I simply pulled the whole air flapper assembly out, pending purchase of a new air thermostat. Now I'm pulling a mix of both hot and cold air all the time.
No other changes to car.
Made the same 900 mile trip, this time carrying two more passengers and associated luggage. Let 16-year-old daughter drive home while I snoozed. Woke up around midnight to find her driving 85 mph up Interstate #5. That doesn't help mileage.
Average mileage this trip: 26.4 mpg.
