1800 Performance Upgrade

Hello, I am new to this site. Like many others I am looking for some advice, leadership and guidance. I own a 1973 1800 ES. I plane to upgrade the B20 engine for more power. I am not looking to push it to the extreme. I want to maintain good gas milage and replace the auto transmission with a newer tranny that will match engine performance. ($3K buget)

Please advise.
