Resetting Service Engine Light procedure not really working? S90-V90 1998

On a 1998 V90: I did what it says in the FAQ. Popped out plug, pushed in the button. Put plug back in. Light went out but next time I started the car (and every other time since then) it was back on. Yes, it's the SEL, not the CEL. Is the engine supposed to be running or not when you do this? Does it make a difference? Anything else I could be screwing up? If this is just an oil timer, I'm not sure why it would come right back on...
