a/c clutch on 960 900

sounds like my a/c clutch is going out.
I've researched this board and others seem to have had a similar grinding noise.
What are the chances of me fixing this myself? I don't want to tear into it too bad (take out radiator, power steering, alternator). Is it accessable from the front (I've got girly small hands). Never attempted anything like this before.
It's made a bad grinding noise for about 100 miles now. The Volvo guy set up an appointment for me on Monday. What should I be aware of when I take it in?
New compressor? Contaiminated freon?
I am mechanically inclined but am afraid that it's more than just the clutch. I don't know how to do air conditioning systems.
