Check Engine Light Has Been On 900

The Check Engine Light has been on for some time now in my '96, 960 and my mechanic recently told me that the gasket on the lower manifold is shot and is causing it to suck in air and thus, run too lean. One of the cylinders (#3) is not working at all when cold.

Could this cause the Check Engine light to stay on and also effect the idle?
