Anybody ever had this one?
The car is a 1982 242 turbo, M46 tranny.
When I start from a stop, part of the shifter mechanism thunks afew times against the inside of the driveshaft tunnel. It doesn't happen at any other time; it doesn't happen early in the morning when it's cold (I live in Kansas).
Clearly, I've got a tranny mount issue. Apparently when it's cold, it's relatively hard and holds the tranny. Then as it (the mount) warms up, it gets mushy and lets the tranny smack the car.
I replaced the mount about 3 years ago (35,000 miles); it started doing this immediately. I just put in another new one and it still thunks against the car.
So... I'm considering putting small spacers (like 1/4") between the tranny cross member and the car body. Obviously, this will lower the tail of the tranny 1/4". The question is this: Would the offset (of the tranny tail) cause any undo stress on the front U-joint, carrier bearing, or any other part of the drive line?
As always, thanks.
