Trying to disconnect driveshaft from tranny flange: what wrench for those bolts?? 200 1989

In the procedure to replace the rear automatic tranny seal and bushing, the drive shaft must be disconnected from the tranny flange. There are several (I think four) bolts and nuts. I was "scoping" out the job, i.e., trying to determine what size wrenches to use and it looks like the nuts are 17mm and the bolt heads are like 15 or 16mm. On my car, the bolt and nut/driveshaft flange orientation is such that the bolt head is towards the rear of the car and the nut is near the transmission.

I can't get a socket on the nut because there is interference between the center portion of the tranny output flange and the socket. Consequently, I will have to use an open-ended 17mm wrench. Well..........when I tried the wrench...it started rounding off the nut...so I immediately stopped. What have you been successful with???

By the way, the tranny mount and bushing has already been disconnected. So the tranny moves a bit on the floor jack when I try to use the open-ended 17mm wrench....but like I said, the wrench started slipping/rounding off the nut. I don't want to round off these nuts. Kinda stuck here. Anybody done this before??
