Help reinstalling side panels of large center console 200 1983

We have pulled, and reinstalled, the carpet on the 1983 240GL. Part of the instructions were to remove the side panels from the center console (which houses the radio, etc.). We were successful in all respects except one: these panels are secured by a plastic clip at the bottom, and by a metal screw at the top. We can't get the metal screws to "bite" into anything now. CAn anyone offer any tips on how to do this (or have we, perhaps, somehow lost a clip that belongs inside)?
