Report on Clutch Replacement 200

My son, with the help of two friends, successfully replaced the clutch on his 81 M46 over the last two days. Everything went according to plan. The hard part seemed to be maneuvering the transmission in and out of place. Definitely have a friend to help on this job. He also had to use two main seals because they wrecked the first one on installation. Another tough part was getting the pilot bearing out of the crank. The bearing fell apart when they pulled the tranny out, leaving the outer race firmly planted in the crank. They managed to make a tool to slowly pry it out without harming anything.

Price came to $209 total.

$130 FCP: Sachs clutch kit and shipping.

$29 IPD: plastic alignment tool, pilot bearing, crank seal, shipping.

$50 locally for extra crank seal and new clutch cable.

Price quote for shop job was $550.
