'87 240 DL wagon. Replacing from bearings, seals, etc. (as well as rotors and calips)
I need help!
I set the races in the hub, packed the inner bearings and tapped in retainer ring. When I put it on the spindle I can't get the hub and bearings far enough back onto the spindle. It comes about an inch short of reaching the rubber seal inboard on the spindle. Like it gets stuck where the spindle stops tapering out. It's not on enough for me to put the nut on after I put the outer bearings in hub.
Am I doing something wrong? Am I supposed to use a hammer to tap it further on to the spindle? I'm installing the same hub and replaced the old bearings with set 17 Timkin bearings with the supplied races.
When I put the inner bearing race into the hub it stopped at the first ridge. The bottom of the race is too wide to get to the bottom ridge. Maybe 1/8". Since these races were a set with bearings I would assume they're the right size. And the retaining ring inboard is flush with hub when I tap it in so that seems right.
I just don't want to start tapping the hub on if I'll ruin the bearings until I know for sure.
I really appreciate your help I'm a newbie at this one.
thanks,
