Front end swap? 120-130

Hi all,
One more post for investigating the do's and dont's in the work planned for next month on my 122... After the carbs and the rear end, I'm now looking at the front axle. What I want to do is basically prepare a renewed unit to transplant it some day in november, so the car will not be unavailable for too long.
I had a 1969 front end in my spares, which I hav now dismanteled. My plan is to renew all the rubber and ball joints. The unit will go on a 1965 car, which will provide the one circuit brake calipers, backing plates and the parts on which one bolts the calipers (what's their name in English, BTW?).
Before I go any further, I'd like to know what's compatible between the older and newer style: can I use the B20 king pins and wishbones provided I get the appropriate ball joints? (What has actually changed in the ball joints: only the lifetime lubrication in the later models?) Will the B20 cope with the 1965 parts I will bolt onto them, including the one that connects them to the steering rods?
One more question: the car I took the whole thing off was driving and had evenly used tires. I have now carefully collected and marked the shims of the upper wishbones. When putting the whole thing together again, should I start from scratch with no shims before going for an adjustment or should I put them back in place?

Thanks for reading and for your help! Cheers! Sébastien
